When a customer opens their banking app and transfers $500, the trust chain is short and well-understood: the bank knows the device, the customer authenticated with a fingerprint or a password, and the session is scoped to one human sitting in front of one screen. Now replace that customer with an AI agent. Authentication in AI-mediated banking is not a feature request. It is the load-bearing wall of the entire category. Get it wrong, and you expose customers to fraud, regulators to liability, and your institution to reputational risk that is extremely difficult to recover from. The authentication problem, stated precisely
In traditional digital banking, authentication answers one question: is this the account holder? The answer comes from a well-established stack — username and password, biometric verification, device fingerprinting, session tokens, and multi-factor authentication. These mechanisms all share an assumption: there is a human at the keyboard, and that human is the one making the request.
AI agents break this assumption in three distinct ways:
- Identity layering. When an AI agent makes a request, the bank must verify the identity of the AI tool itself, the identity of the customer it claims to represent, and the authorization chain between them. This is a three-party trust problem, not a two-party one.
- Action specificity. A human session implicitly scopes what actions are available — the customer sees a UI with buttons and forms. An AI agent operating through an API has no such constraints. Without explicit action-level authorization, any authenticated agent could theoretically attempt any operation the API surface exposes.
- Temporal ambiguity. Humans interact in real time. AI agents can be invoked asynchronously, batch requests, or act on standing instructions. The question shifts from “is this person authenticated right now?” to “was this person’s intent captured, verified, and still valid at the moment this action executes?”
These aren’t edge cases. They are the default operating conditions for any bank that exposes services to AI assistants.

Authentication might sound like a purely technical problem, but the business implications are existential. Why existing auth paradigms fall short
It’s tempting to assume that existing authentication frameworks can be stretched to cover AI agents. They can, but only with a stricter security profile than most banks use in production today.
Session-based authentication
Traditional session-based auth (cookies, JWTs tied to a browser session) assumes a continuous human presence. An AI agent doesn’t maintain a session in the same way. It may make a single request and disappear, or it may operate across multiple interactions separated by hours. Session-based models either over-authenticate (forcing re-login for every request, destroying the user experience) or under-authenticate (granting long-lived sessions that the customer never explicitly approved).
The core mismatch is that a session becomes standing delegated authority. AI-mediated banking needs short-lived, per-action authority instead of reusable session authority.
OAuth 2.0 and delegated authorization
OAuth was designed for app-to-app delegation and is still the right foundation. But default OAuth deployments are usually too coarse for AI-mediated money movement. Scopes like “read account data” do not capture transaction-level intent like “transfer exactly $200 from A to B before 6:00 PM ET.”
Bearer-token risk is also real in multi-tenant tool environments. Modern OAuth security controls can reduce this risk significantly, but most banks have not deployed them as a complete package with strict per-operation enforcement.
API keys
API keys are the bluntest instrument of all. They authenticate the application, not the customer, and they don’t scope to specific actions or time windows. An API key that authorizes balance checks also authorizes — absent additional controls — wire transfers. For regulated financial services, this is a non-starter.
The core challenge is that AI agent authentication requires solving three problems simultaneously: verifying the tool, verifying the customer, and verifying the customer’s intent for a specific action at a specific moment. That requires a hardened profile across identity, authorization, and runtime enforcement, not a single toggle in an auth server.

Every operation that an AI agent performs through MidLyr requires explicit customer approval. The customer reviews the specific action — the amount, the accounts involved, the purpose — and approves or rejects it. This is not a blanket “allow this app to access my account” consent. It is granular, per-action authorization that the customer controls.

5. Asynchronous execution controls
